Five Strategies to Reduce the Stigma Among High School Students Towards People with Persistent Mental Disorders in Three Cities of Spain

Mental illness remains highly stigmatized, which hinders the recovery process of individuals who experience mental health conditions. This study seeks to evaluate five different strategies to reduce stigma towards individuals with persistent mental disorders. This study also examined the effect of high schools’ proximity to a psychiatric hospital in regard to stigma of people with mental illness. The total sample consisted of 702 high school students, with an age range of 14 to 18 years, with 54% females. The intervention groups were the following: Education, Contact, Self-confrontation, Education + Contact, and Education + Contact + Self confrontation. The present study found differences among cities, and also between the control group and interventions to reduce stigma, largely independent of the city. As a unique intervention, the Self-confrontation strategy obtained more significant results than the Education and Contact method. Nevertheless, the combination of the three strategies revealed the best results.
