Stigma and mental health in people over 65 from a gender perspective

MentDis_ICF65+ is a European epidemiological study of mental disorders in elderly, in ages between 65-84 years. It presents some of the findings on prevalence of mental disorders, service use and barriers to mental health services for older people and their differences by gender, and reviews the differences by gender in the samples used in treatment efficacy studies. It concludes that people over 65 with a mental disorder may suffer from social and personal stigma (self-stigma), as well as age-related stigma (ageism) and possible gender discrimination for some treatments.
